NATURAL WELLNESS, AN ANCIENT SCIENCE
Flowers, Herbs, Leaves & other natural extracts have been used to uplift the quality of human life in India since time immemorial going back thousands of years.
Be it the RIGVEDA written around 5000 BCE or the sacred texts of Ayurveda like the CHARAK SAMHITA & SUSHRUTA SAMHITA, or epics like RAMAYANA & MAHABHARATA. There is a clear mention of aromatic plants being used to improve the quality of human life. Our ancestors came up with innovative concepts like usage of flowers, incenses & various jadi bootis in Yagnyas and other rituals to promote wellbeing for everyone. Through thousands of years of research, the YOGIS & VAIDYAS(what we would call scientists and doctors in todays times) found the use of the sense of smell as an effective tool to promote good health and happiness.
In the Epic Ramayana there is a clear mention of usage of the herbs to effectively heal a seriously wounded Laxman when struck by a DIVYASTRA. In the very famous chapter of Ramayana, Lord Hanuman brought the DRONAGIRI mountain from the HIMALAYAS to obtain the herbs as recommended by the royal physician SUSHENA.
The four herbs that not only brought Laxman back from the jaws of death but also healed him were:
Mruthasanjeevani – the restorer of life
Vishalyakarani – remover of arrows
Sandhanakarani – restorer of skin
Savarnyakarani – restorer of skin colour.

BUDDHISM & ESSENTIAL OILS
As per ancient Buddhist texts it’s clear that usage of aromatic and herbal remedies was practiced since the times of Lord Buddha. Buddhist medical systems were derived from Ayurveda and were propagated by the monks along with Buddhism all over the world.
The usage of aromatherapy was used not only by Buddha himself but also amongst all his followers under the effective guidance of JIVAKA, the most famous and celebrated physician of those times. There is a clear mention how Jivaka, who was trained in the famed TAXILA, was a toast of commoners and the nobles alike.
As per the scriptures Jivaka effectively treated a serious stomach ailment of Buddha by massage with herbal aromatic oils and by the aroma of lotuses. In another chronicled episode, Jivaka had cleaned and treated a serious foot wound that Buddha suffered by using an essential aromatic oil based salve. On several occasions even Buddha was known to have suggested simple inhalations of certain leaves, roots and flowers as a cure for the malaise and fatigue that his hard working monks suffered.
These ancient remedies derived from aromatic plants and oils that were developed in India are still a large part of Tibetan and traditional Chinese & Japanese medicines.
